Fall TV Scorecard

Brent Here:

Dating back to Episode 5, I talked way too much about all the network shows that were going to be showing in Fall.  I figured now would be a good time to go through the shows I’m still watching, some of my favs on each network, and other stuff!

NBC

TiVo’d Shows: Revolution, Go On, The New Normal, Parenthood, Animal Practice/Whitney, Guys With Kids, Law and Order: SVU, 30 Rock, Up All Night, The Office, Parks & Recreation.

While the NBC prides itself on The Voice, I don’t watch that shit.  But I do watch most of the other stuff on the channel.  Surprisingly even to me, I currently DVR 11 shows on that channel (although I only record Law and Order: SVU for MY WIFE).

NBC premiered 6 shows: Revolution, Go On, The New Normal, Animal Practice, Guys With Kids, and Chicago Fire.  The only I didn’t end up even recording was Chicago Fire, because it really just didn’t interest me.  Revolution, we watched the pilot and were lukewarm but willing to give a second episode, but we are falling behind on and that might get the axe soon.  I was very happy with Go On and The New Normal in particular but also found Animal Practice and Guys With Kids worth watching on a weekly basis.  Of course, as we mentioned on Episode 27 of the podcast, Animal Practice got the axe and was replaced with new episodes of Whitney.

Current Favorite: Parks and Recreation.  I absolutely feel that this is one of the best comedies on TV right now.  It consistently makes me laugh, there are a lot of genius moments, and this show is still getting to the point where it gets better every week.

Runners Up: 30 Rock and Parenthood.  30 Rock is my second favorite sitcom on the network and I’m sad that it’s ending, it still makes me laugh week-in and week-out.  The Office is still enjoyable but it really has lost a lot since Steve Carell left.  Parenthood is probably my favorite drama on Network TV, it is way better than the concept would suggest and makes you feel for all the characters.  What started as “I’ll just watch the show for Lauren Graham” has extended to this show is just ridiculously good.

FOX

TiVo’d Shows: The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Bones, Raising Hope, Ben and Kate, New Girl, The Mindy Project, Fringe

Even with only two hours of TV on per night, I’m still recording 10 shows on the network, with Bones being exclusively for my wife.  We also record Fringe but are literally a season and a half behind on it.  We just might have to bite the bullet and stop recording that some day.  While I’ve enjoy Fringe, it is just a hard watch, which is why it’s one of the last things we get to.

FOX premiered 3 shows: The Mob Doctor, The Mindy Project, and Ben and Kate.  Never ended up giving The Mob Doctor a shot and it sounds like it’s life is short-lived as it’s ratings have been awful.  The Mindy Project is easily the best new show while Ben and Kate has been watchable.

Current Favorite: Raising Hope.  I might get some criticism from my co-host for putting this but My Name is Earl was one of my favorite TV shows and Greg Garcia brought all the things that made that show so good into Raising Hope and continues the legacy.  It is easily one of the shows I go to first when it’s on my TiVo.

Runners Up: Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Glee, New Girl.  FOX really has good programming.  Bob’s Burgers is one of the most brilliant animated shows in a while.  The voice cast is superb and always makes me chuckle.  Regardless of what many think, The Simpsons still has it.  By far the most impressive television show of all time.  I’m probably going to get some shit for these next few sentences but, Glee is still very good but it’s lost a little bit of it’s charm since the first season.  It’s still really good TV just not fantastic.  New Girl is very quirky and fun but every time I watch an episode, I just feel like everyone enjoys it more than I do.  It’s a good show but I don’t think it’s great.

ABC

TiVo’d Shows: Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Castle, Happy Endings, Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, The Neighbors, Modern Family, Suburgatory, Nashville, Last Man Standing

Surprising to me that I’m up to 10 recorded shows on the alphabet network with two shows (not included in that number) that I haven’t watched yet.  Revenge is the only show that I record strictly for the Mrs.

ABC premiered 5 new shows: 666 Park Avenue, The Neighbors, Nashville, Last Resort, and Malibu Country.  I have the first few episodes of 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort on the TiVo and haven’t watched them yet, both looked promising.  Malibu Country premieres 11/2.  While I’ve really enjoyed both The Neighbors and Nashville. Especially The Neighbors, it’s a really great/funny show.

Current Favorite: Dancing With the Stars… SYKE! Once Upon a Time.  Going through ABC I realize I like a lot of shows but don’t love any of them.  Once Upon a Time has done an extremely impressive job taking the fairy tales we grew up with and reinventing them.  It’s a really unique show that has real potential to be great.

Runners Up: Modern Family, Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, Castle.  Modern Family is a great sitcom and there isn’t an episode that doesn’t make me laugh just can’t help but feel it’s just a little overrated.  Looking forward to new episodes of Don’t Trust the B, thought the first season was great and hope that it builds on that.  Happy Endings I didn’t mention but have really enjoyed as well.  Castle has done the impossible, made me watch a procedural every week.  Fillion is the man and the writing is just really good.

CBS

TiVo’d Shows: The Good Wife, How I Met Your Mother, Partners, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Criminal Minds, The Big Bang Theory

I am currently recording 7 shows on this network, with The Good Wife and Criminal Minds just being for the wife.  This networks programming appeals to me the least of all the networks and if it wasn’t for their sitcoms, I would have no use for it.

CBS premiered 4 shows: Partners, Vegas, Elementary, and Made in Jersey.  I haven’t watched Vegas and Elementary but am hoping to give them both a chance at some point.  Made in Jersey was already cancelled.  Partners has been nothing special but still watchable.

Current Favorite: How I Met Your Mother.  After 8 seasons of basically doing nothing (it’s the new Seinfeld), this show is just so good every week.  The cast is perfect and after all this time it still keeps you on your toes and interested about the identity of the mother.

Runners Up: The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, and Mike & Molly.  Find 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly perfect compliments to HIMYM on Monday nights and enjoy both of those shows every week.  The Big Bang Theory is a monster of a show ratings wise and is great.

CW

TiVo’d Shows: 90210, Hart of Dixie, Arrow, America’s Next Top Model

I am currently recording 4 shows on the network and surprisingly America’s Next Top Model isn’t just for my wife.

The CW premiered 3 new shows:  Emily Owens MD, Arrow, and Beauty and the Beast.  I haven’t watched Emily Owens yet but it is on the DVR.  Enjoyed the premiere of Arrow and am anxious to see where it’s going.  Watched the first episode of Beauty and the Beast and thought it was pretty bad.

Current Favorite: Arrow.  I was really happy with the pilot of the show and while it has some flaws, hopefully it turns into something really solid.

Runners Up: 90210, America’s Next Top Model.  I also watch Hart of Dixie and enjoy it but am constantly behind.  90210 is so bad, it’s good.  Just one of those shows that is fun to watch.  I really have no rationale for America’s Next Top Model, it’s just another one of those good bad shows, they seem to find so many unique personalities in their contestants that make you pretty much hate every single one of them.  Tyra Banks is probably the worst reality show host ever which makes it even better.

Alright so that’s largely what I’m watching when it comes to network TV.  What are you watching?  What do you really enjoy on the boob tube?

Movie Review: The Way

So, I’ve decided to try to cut a few minutes out of the podcast by limiting the movies I talk about on the podcast.  I will still probably pull one recent DVD release to talk about that I think is interesting but considering I can watch anywhere from 2 to 7 movies a week, I figured the Tumblr would be a good way to talk about all of the extra things I’ve watched that aren’t extremely podcast worthy.

The Way [Blu-ray]

The first of these is the movie The Way.  This movie was a limited release in theaters in October 2011.  As podcast listeners probably know, 2011 was one of those years where I literally tried to watch pretty much everything released in theaters for the entire calendar year, whether in the theaters or later on DVD release.  I’m also trying to do the same thing for 2012 (and hopefully onward as time permits).  To prove how insane I am this is my 173rd movie watched from 2011.  I have two more on my list (Sherlock Holmes 2 and Arthur Christmas) to end it at a nice even 175.  Enough about my insanity, let’s go on to The Way.

The Way was written and directed by Emilio Estevez and stars his father Martin Sheen.  This is the sequel to D2: The Mighty Ducks and revolves around the character of Tom, played by Martin Sheen, who is a California Doctor that unexpectedly gets a phone call that his only son, played by Emilio Estevez (Charlie Sheen does not exist in that universe, which is awesome), was killed on the first day of doing this 2-month long walk called the Camino de Santiago. Tom goes to France to pick up his son’s belongings and instead of going back to California, he decides to complete the walk that his son started, sprinkling his son’s ashes along the way at memorable points.

I really enjoyed this movie far more than I thought I would.  This was a powerful and inspirational story that didn’t rely on beating you over the head with a religious theme. There were some undertones but considering how the walk is steeped in religious iconography, it could have gone more that way (pun intended) but instead focused on the characters.  Martin Sheen gave a tremendous performance and the supporting cast of trekkers, who were all doing the walk for different reasons, were all were interesting and provided rich, deep characters to surround Tom.

I would whole heartily recommend this flick if you’re looking for a movie that warms your soul and feel like backpacking across Europe but are far too lazy to do so.

Random Words From Brent

It’s clear there hasn’t been much of an update with this Tumbls recently.  Why is this?  I can’t say for sure.  It’s some sort of combination of laziness and trying to figure out what to write about that would appeal to the few individuals that read this.  All while simultaneously trying to make this interesting to outside parties in hopes of branding our podcast and increasing our audience.

The one thing that we knew going into the podcasting universe was it was going to be hard to make a dent in the current landscape.  This has more than proven to be true.  It’s a world populated by Ricky Gervais, Kevin Smith, Adam Carolla, Chris Hardwick, amongst millions of others.  This isn’t to say I’m comparing ourselves to those individuals in any way (we are far inferior), but those are people with a built-in audience, who can start a podcast and have thousands of listeners instantly.

We knew going in it was going to be a difficult to attract new listeners to a podcast done by basically two normies. Don’t get it twisted, I’m extremely happy that anybody listens at all.  We live in an era where entertainment options are at an abundance and for anybody to be able to spend an hour and a half every week to listen to our podcast is amazing.  I truly couldn’t be more grateful and it kind of blows my mind that anybody would listen to it at all.  That’s not saying anything about the quality of our podcast, I really enjoy it, I just have low self-esteem.

So, I’ve been thinking about possible events that we could do to try to increase our audience.  Going the Geekdrome approach and having a Kevin Smith-level talent as a guest would be the “easy” way of increasing listeners, of course getting them onto the podcast would be a much more difficult ordeal.  I believe we’ve shamelessly plugged the podcast on our own respective twitter accounts that anybody that follows us on their has made up their mind.  I think there are a few internal tweaks we could do to make it more appealing to listen to and possibly having more frequent guests (finding anyone willing has been difficult) to change the dynamics could help increase word of mouth.  But we need a few more mouths in the first place and trying to figure those out have been a challenge for just two normal dudes who love movies, TV, comics, video games and food.

This entire blog may sound like a bitch session but it’s far from it. I know we were never going to be international megastars from doing this podcast, but I’ve always strived to make an enjoyable product that anyone can listen to or read and enjoy.  I love our podcast.  I love doing our podcast and it’s probably the highlight of my week.  I love to watch movies, watch TV, read comics, play video games, and eat food.  To have an open forum to talk about it with my best friend on a weekly basis is fantastic.  Wish we would have started this years ago.

So that gets me to the Tumbls.  I think the Tumbls could really help the podcast reach a larger audience if we write about the right things.  I’ve kind of gone back and forth on this.  Do I make it an extended version of the podcast?  Just use it for show notes?  Do I just post about really good deals on Amazon that relate to the podcast?  Do I talk about all forms of new media coming out and recommend which things to check out?  Should I use it for news items? Should I post 1 thing a day?  27 things a day?  Should we do less movie/comic reviews and throw some on the Tumblr instead? Or just scrap it altogether?  I guess, I’m asking out to anyone that possibly read all this to help us.  What would you like to see us do?  Which direction do you want to see the podcast go in?  Any constructive criticism, praise would be acceptable too, for us would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve wanted to write about the world that AB Conversation covers for a long time.  I did a few reviews in the high school newspaper, a Mario Kart Wii review in my college newspaper, and a ton of writing on the Internet about wrestling figures way back (including working on the biggest wrestling news site on the planet and being the editor and main writer on the best site dedicated to action figure news).  My biggest regret was not doing more writing at that time and trying to make a go at writing instead of settling for accounting.  Not that I’m bad at accounting, I’m actually ridiculously good at my job, but there are a lot of times where it’s just not that interesting.  I would much rather be sitting at home watching a bad movie and writing about it then entering payroll or purchase orders.  I do want to use this Tumblr to expand on this desire and hopefully it’ll get those writer juices flowing once more.  I just need to figure out the right track of things to talk about and I will do that.  That’s where I need some guidance.

Thank you!

So I Think You Should Watch So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance is easily the most underrated competition reality show on television.  I talked about it briefly in one of the episodes of the podcast.  But after last night’s completely ridiculous episode, I have to talk about it again.  It pulls in less than half the ratings of something like American Idol or The Voice but easily tops those shows in greatness.

I know nothing about Dance.  I started watching this show 6 years ago because of Julie and we would talk on AOL instant messanger about the dancers during the show.  I would normally have no interest in any show about dancing but there is just something magnificent about the performances that these amazing individuals put on.  The first few weeks like most shows in this format are auditions (and probably my favorite weeks), it’s pretty much like every audition shows where you get to meet some of the contestants, they dance, and if they do a good job they get a ticket to VEGAS! But watching these tremendous individuals perform solos that they have been practicing  for years or even their entire lives is astonishing.  Of course, after they go to Vegas the competition gets whittled down to the Top 10 girls and Top 10 guys and they perform in pairs (with some group) numbers, choreographed by many of America’s top choreographers, to see who becomes America’s Favorite Dancer.

Ok, so to explain the clip.  Yesterday’s episode was the auditions in Atlanta, earlier in the show one of the members of Dragon House (it’s a dance troupe that shares an apartment) performed and did an awesome job, then later another member auditioned and did an ever better job, and then Glitch performed and this is what happened.

I don’t care how good somebody’s voice is on American Idol or The Voice.  I don’t care how much talent a person has on America’s Got Talent.   If you can find me any better audition than that one (or any performance on Dancing with the Stars), I will be impressed.

Needless to say, start watching So You Think You Can Dance.  Next week is I think the last week of auditions and it’s in Salt Lake City, which is usually the best of the auditions.  Please give Dance a chance!

Episode 7 Show Notes

Here are the official show notes for Episode 7: The Biggest Bunch of Losers James Franco Has Never Seen, which is a reference to James Franco’s quote about the show Girls, which is quickly becoming a big-time favorite of Brent.

Movies:

This week in movies we talk about all of the movies we’ve watched this week:  Brent adored the movie Tiny Furniture (written, directed and starred in by Luna Dunham of Girls).  Also, watched the new hockey comedy Goon.  Anthony talks about watching Crazy, Stupid, Love, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, and Men in Black 3.

We are both looking forward to checking out Safety Not Guarenteed.

Plus, we discuss some movie theaters local to us and a big bunch of movies that are coming out next weekend.  We also talk about some movie news including a Joss Whedon action figure, Iron Man 3 stuff, and the Fraggle Rock movie.

Plus, Piranha 3DD wasn’t released in a lot of theaters and for that reason they decided to release it on Video on Demand day and date, so it is available to download in your home right now.  Click the link below to download and watch it from Amazon, you can even watch it on your PS3, X-Box 360, TiVo, Roku boxes, etc.

TV:

Brent watched one of the first episodes of the Comedy Bang Bang TV show (based on a podcast of the same name) and if you like alternate comedy you should do the same.  It’s for free (presumably for a limited time) on iTunes or at Amazon and worth checking out.

We also watched the pilot for Bunheads, which is available for presumably a short time to stream online, follow the directions on this Tumblr post to watch.  If you were a fan of Gilmore Girls, you will love it.  If you weren’t a fan of Gilmore Girls, you should be!

Plus we talk about The Glee Project and set-up our Fantasy RealiGlee teams.  The rules of Fantasy Reality are as follows, 2 people draft teams of 7 people each (in this instance) and give out points based on elimination.  For example, the first person eliminated would get 14 points, 2nd person eliminated would get 13 points, the Winner gets 1 point.  If two people get eliminated in one episode the first person announced as eliminated will get the higher point total.  The team with the lowest points wins.

On Anthony’s team is: Charlie, Tyler, Blake, Abraham, Lily, Dani, Nellie

On Brent’s team is: Mario, Michael, Maxfield, Ali, Aylin, Taryn, Shanna

Comics:

We discuss Takio, Buffy: Season 9, The Guild: Fawkes, and there not being any Gilmore Girls comics.

Video Games:

We talk a little about the new Star Wars video game and will have more coverage next week as the huge video game event E3, so expect some video game discussion on next week’s podcast.

In Your Mouth:

Brent gives his backstory about Coke Freestyle machines and can’t wait to spend more time with them in the future, Anthony ran into a little bad luck.

We also talk about mmmmeatball (football) subs, pizza burritos, and more things that have been in our mouth!

What the Fuck is the Internet?:

In our technology/online culture segment, Anthony talks about the Flipboard app for the iPhone and we talk about The Guild: Munchkin game.

Listener of the Week:

The listener of the week is Carolyn Janz who listens to us in the car on her way into work in the morning.  Now that’s the perfect way to spend the morning car ride if you ask us!

AB Conversation: An Origin Story

Brent Here:

This started off as a LiveJournal entry, but I decided that this probably deserved to get posted over here as well.

Six weeks ago, I started doing a podcast with my friend, Best Man at my wedding, and fellow geek Anthony. The inspiration of it was for several reasons, I have said since I started listening to Geekdrome and Geekscape that doing a show like that would be perfect for Anthony and I as we both consume massive amounts of TV, Movies, Comics, and Video Games. I realize the geek landscape was full of similar programs and Anthony and I’s wouldn’t be that much different and due to that and just the mysteriousness of podcasting, not much was done with the idea. For the past several years, yes this goes back years, Anthony or myself would briefly come up with some sort of ideas or whatever for the podcast and we always promised that someday it would happen.

As what happens in life people get busy, due to this Anthony and I would see each other less and less. Only really getting together for the rare Conan O’Brien or Ricky Gervais live show or for a Curb Your Enthusiasm marathon, the strangest part is we literally live not even a 5-minute walk from each other, literally. However, we always remained friends and because of having many of the same interests, never really grew apart.

However, everything clicked in the right way on the evening of March 25, 2012. That evening was spent with Kevin Smith (and about 1500 other people). Kevin was out promoting his new book, Tough Shit: Live Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good, and luckily came to Milwaukee for one of his stops. So for a very reasonable price, got an autographed copy of this book and we sat 2nd row for a 2 hour Q&A session. Kevin Smith has become famous for his Q&A sessions over the past 7 years or so, which is truly ironic for a guy who spent the 90’s and early 2000’s known as Silent Bob.

In recent years, Kevin Smith has become famous for the SModcast network of podcasts that he and some of his friends do. He truly believes that the future of entertainment is in podcasts, so much that he’s going to be retiring from making films after his next movie, and primarily focus on podcasting. He gave a rousing speech, that I think both affected Anthony and myself, featured on the one single idea of “Why Not?”

If you do nothing else at least watch the last four minutes, I recommend the entire clip but these 4 minutes are inspiration at it’s purest.

On the way back to the car, we could talk about nothing else besides the podcast. Less than a month later, we finally figured out our schedules and got together the day of April 22 to record our first podcast. I think at that moment, we realized that we had something special. Not in the fact that what we are doing is the most magnificent thing on the planet, but just simply that we both found something that we both really enjoy doing. We get together every Sunday and shoot the shit for an hour and a half and record it. That people listen to it and actually enjoy listening to it, is just icing on the cake. Over the past week, we pulled in over 300 downloads including 99 on one day alone. That is fucking awesome.

For just two schmucks who just enjoy bullshitting about movies, being able to talk about them and have people actually like listening to us blab about them is a dream come true. I think these 6 podcasts are just the beginning. Whether it’s just us two or we bring in a friend of ours in to shoot the shit with us. I think this is the most fun I’ve had doing a hobby, as it incorporates all of the things I do as hobbies into a discussion and with Anthony, who is always a pleasure to talk about this sort of stuff with. It’s something that I look forward to doing every single week, normally the only thing I look forward to in life is going home after work and eating dinner. I hope you enjoy listening to this podcast even a fraction of how much I enjoy making it.

Podcast Bloggy: The Gosling

Brent Here:

This one is for the ladies! As today we are talking about Ryan Gosling. Anthony’s watching of Crazy, Stupid, Love and tweets about Ryan Gosling had me thinking about him (not in THAT way), in retrospect to me saying that Crazy, Stupid, Love was his breakout movie and one of the reasons he won the Brenty Award for last year (as well as Drive, and more minorly The Ides of March). Anthony mentioned that it was his first Ryan Gosling movie and it had me temporarily brainfarted into thinking it was mine as well, as I have never seen the movie he is most associated with, The Notebook.

So I went to Ryan Gosling’s IMDB and realized that I obviously had seen him before. He was in 2006’s Half Nelson, which was the movie that put him on most of Hollywood’s map and 2010’s Blue Valentine with Michelle Williams. Butt I didn’t even think of my previous favorite movie, Lars and the Real Girl.

I suppose the reason I didn’t think of this, is this is not your typical Ryan Gosling movie. As the character he plays isn’t sexy or cool, but instead he’s about as big of an outcast as possible. Due to his inabilities to find companionship in a human, which you wouldn’t typically think of as a Gosling issue, he starts up a relationship with a real doll that he orders. Needless to say this is a very enjoyable off-beat movie and should not be missed whether you are a fan of Ryan Gosling or not.

Episode 5 Show Notes

Here are the official shownotes for Episode 5: The Beard That Goes All The Way Down To Your Butt.

Introduction:
We talk about our “partnership” with Amazon, in which you can help support our podcast and get quality shit at awesome prices by clicking on the Amazon banners on this website (like the one below this paragraph). We also talk about this tumblr page and how it is going to be used for doing things like show notes and “podcast bloggys” and any other random writing that we want to do throughout the week. It’s like a podcast for your eyes.

Podcast Bloggy: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Brent Here:

Apparently the director of The Avengers movie has done some television work. He created this little watched show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’ve heard good things and you should check it out!

But seriously, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the greatest shows that’s ever aired on television and most of the reason that I’m the geek I am today. I could literally go on for paragraphs about how Anthony introduced (sired) me into a Buffy fan and how magnificent the show is. But I will just say this, if you don’t own the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, you need to. If you haven’t watched it, correct that mistake right now and finally experience this fantastic journey.

Currently it’s $93.99 on Amazon, which may seem like a steep price, but for 7 seasons and 144 episodes of the finest television you will watch, it’s practically a steal. So click on this icon, buy this shit from amazon and spend 144 hours over Memorial Day weekend with your new family, Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Angel, and Spike.

Podcast Bloggy: Amazon Instant Video Deal

Brent Here:

I love Amazon’s Instant Video program. I have my TiVo set-up with Amazon, so whenever I rent a movie from there it downloads automatically to that TiVo device and I watch it right on my TV. You can also use your PS3 to purchase and watch any of their videos on your TV as well (PS3 also supports Amazon Prime Streaming). Or you can watch them right on your computer! The best thing about Amazon Instant Video is every day they have a different newer release movie for $0.99, except over the weekend when they have a few very new releases for $1.99. Last weekend, I downloaded Happy Feet 2 for $2.99 (it’s an extra buck for HD). Plus once every month or two, through their twitter account (@AmazonVideo) they’ll give you $1-$3 just for posting stuff. So usually you don’t even have to pay.

Anyway the reason I bring this up, isn’t to shamelessly promote Amazon, it’s to inform (and if we make a few shekels off of it as well, that’s awesome but not the point). Today’s daily deal (which is only good through the end of TODAY) is a great one. You can rent the movie that just won 3 Brenty Awards, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo from Amazon for just $0.99! That’s just $0.33 per Brenty Award. Amazon gives you a month to start watching the movie so you can download it today and save it for this weekend, Memorial Day weekend or whenever else in the next 30 days plus you get 24-hours to watch the movie, so you have plenty of time to watch it if you get distracted, especially since it is a 159 minutes long, or you could just watch it 9 times in those 24 hours!

2011 Brenty Awards

Brent Here:

For the first time ever, the 2011 Brenty Awards were presented in audio form in the latest episode, Episode 4, of our podcast!  For those that don’t know, the Brenty Awards are my favorite movies in each genre of film for that year, as well as my favorite actors, actresses, and directors, in addition to the movie of the year!  Read below the fold for the winners in each category as well as a shameless link to purchase these movies on Amazon.  Be sure to listen to this podcast at http://abconversation.podomatic.com or search for ‘AB Conversation’ on iTunes and download/subscribe to our podcast there to hear the rest of the nominees, as well as rationale for the decisions made and all of the previous winners since the Brenty Awards started in 2001.

P.S.  I’m not sure why they are called the Brenty Awards, besides most award shows ending in ‘Y’ like Emmy’s, Tony’s, & Grammy’s.

Not Knot

Here is the video from Winnie the Pooh I mentioned in episode 4 of our podcast.

Podcast Bloggy: Tenacious D

Brent Here:

I have been a Tenacious D fan for a long-time and it’s awesome to see them back on the music scene. Tenacious D consists of Jack Black and Kyle Gass. I guess the genre of music they create can best be described as Comedy-Rock, they make rock songs that have amazingly clever and funny lyrics but are still excellently made rock songs. Jack Black is the singer, Kyle Gass does back-up vocals and plays acoustic guitar, and they are typically joined by random members playing electric guitar, bass and drums including frequent contributor Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl on drums. Here is the video from their first album for the greatest song in the world, “Tribute.”

The reason I bring up Tenacious D is they have a new album that is being released in stores TODAY! I had the album pre-ordered for a while and it will be here shipped by Amazon today. I am definitely excited to check that out as they were awesome last night on Letterman performing their new song Roadie.

I highly recommend checking out all of their work whether it’s their first self-titled album “Tenacious D”, “The Pick of Destiny” movie or soundtrack, and today’s new release “Rise of the Fenix.” The actual albums are available as well as the MP3s, if you’re into that sort of thing. Amazon provides an excellent MP3 service, as their prices regularly are much better than iTunes and they can be downloaded straight into your iTunes library.

Probably my favorite Tenacious D product is “The Complete Master Works” which features a concert from the live tour for their self-titled album, including Jack Black playing the Saxoboom! As well as their very Flight of the Conchordish HBO shorts that they did for a few songs on the first album. It’s a 2 DVD set that delivers nothing but hours of awesomeness.

I have bought tickets to see them in concert July 7 in Chicago and this will be my first time seeing the D live and I could not be more excited to finally see them perform and rock my face off in person. I hope you give them a listen!

Celebrity Bowling: Nerdist vs. Geek and Sundry

Watch two of our favorite web video providers Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist battle Felicia Day’s Geek and Sundry in Celebrity Bowling!

Amazon's Amazing TV Deal of the Week

I would honestly be posting this even if we didn’t make a single penny out of it. The Amazon TV on DVD deal of the week is two of our favorite shows, Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. Both are tremendous television programs that got canceled way too early in their runs and also introduced us to a ton of people who are household names today.

Freaks and Geeks is a television show about two unique groups of teenagers dealing with life in high school during the 80’s. It stars Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daily, James Franco, Samm Levine, Seth Rogen, Jason Segal, Martin Starr, and Busy Phillips. It’s created by Paul Feig (director of Bridesmaids) and Executive Produced by Judd Apatow. All before they were household names.

Also, Undeclared is about college freshman Steve Karp and his fellow dorm-mates embark on one the greatest experiences of their lives…unfortunately for Steve, his lonely and recently divorced father is tagging along for the ride. This stars Jay Baruchel, Charlie Hunnam, Carla Gallo, Monica Keena, Seth Rogen, Loudon Wainwright III, and Jason Segal. This was created by Judd Apatow.

Both are not to missed and need to be part of your DVD collection right now if they aren’t already! Plus, this is the cheapest they’ve been on Amazon in years. I already owned Freaks and Geeks but after years of waiting for Undeclared to go down from it’s normal $36-$40 price tag, it’s only $19.99. Freaks and Geeks is regularly $50+ and is only $30.49. They’re practically giving them away!

Remember to click the pictures, links, banners for Amazon and we get a small percentage to throw back into the podcast, I would eventually like to get us some microphones and such so we can make a big quality improvement and you can help us achieve this goal!
