Movie Reviews: 5/28/14

3 Days to Kill is the most recent in a seemingly endless string of movies co-written by Luc Besson, seriously it seems like he has at least 11 of these movies every year.  In this action-thriller Kevin Costner is a retired spy who tries to reconnect with his family but needs to take one last job to have access to an experimental drug that could save his life.  This is not a bad movie and something that I could easily see having a good cable audience.  This tries to be The Professional with the father-daughter relationship but it just never comes close to touching those levels in story telling.

Pompeii is easily the most head scratching movie of the year so far.  It's a love story inside of a Gladiator-style movie, inside of a disaster movie.  Nothing seems to really click and at the end of the day, I didn't really feel anything for any characters when they all meet their demise.  Is that a spoiler?  The entire premise of the movie is a giant volcano that murders everyone so I don't think so, but expect about as happy of an ending as a movie like this can have.  Kiefer Sutherland is in this movie and as much as I like Jack Bauer, he should not have been cast in this as he felt completely out of place.  I'm not sure what audience this was going for, there's too much violence and death for this to be a chick flick, and I'm not sure it'll ever find much of one because it's just not a very good movie.

Vampire Academy sadly is just not a very good movie.  This movie is like if Twilight took place inside of Mean Girls, but unfortunately just never really clicks.  It's not funny/clever enough to really make a lasting impression and the teenage vampire love story seems a little tired at this point.  The acting performances weren't all bad as I thought Zoey Duetch carried this movie, but her co-star Lucy Fry just never seemed anything other than bland.
