Geek News You Should Know: 5/15/14

1) The creators of such awesome comic books as Criminal, Sleeper, and Fatale, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips have announced their newest creation, The Fade Out.  I'm not a huge noir nerd, so I was a little hesitant to pick up their books, and I'm not going to lie, sometimes I find them a little hard to get into at first, but once I do there are very few things I'd rather pick up.  The first issue is going to clock-in at 40 pages and will also be available in a movie magazine sized variant with extra art and articles in the back.  The coolest part about picking up the individual issues for Brubaker/Phillips books is they usually feature a unique article in the back of the book that is only available in the floppy.  The first issue will be available to pre-order in June and hit store shelves in August.

2) Katey Segal, most famous for her work on the small screen as Peg Bundy in Married With Children and Gemma on Sons of Anarchy, will be dancing her way onto the big screen in Pitch Perfect 2.  She will be playing the mom to new aca-awesome cast addition Hailee Steinfeld.  Segal recently released her first album, so it will be interesting to see how she plays into the grand scheme of things and maybe be a previous member of the Bellas.  I could not be more excited to find out and it comes out exactly a year from today.

3) The producers of the new film In Your Eyes, written by Joss Whedon have sent out gifts to random people who rented the film from Vimeo shortly after it was released.  Amongst the prizes mailed out were AppleTVs, X-Box Ones, Rokus, grills, autographed posters and scripts, and even a cactus!  Very cool way of giving back to the fans.

4) The WWE's contract with NBC/Universal was set to expire in October and this included all television shows shown on the network primarily Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown, these shows earn the WWE $160 million annually in revenue and WWE was hoping to double this number with it's new deal.  It was announced today during the NBC/Universal upfront that WWE and the networks have renewed their deal with a slight boost in income.  Details are scarce on what, if any, changes will be made.  There have been talks about airing Smackdown live on Tuesdays since it is recorded on Tuesdays right now, also no word on when replays of these shows would be permitted with the WWE Network.

5)  Finally the last of the major networks, The CW, has announced their 2014-2015 TV plans.  The only real change to the time slots is The Originals has moved to Monday nights.  Hart of Dixie and Beauty & the Beast have both been moved to mid-season and are presumably on their last legs as a series.  The most interesting CW new series iZombie, by Veronica Mars' Rob Thomas will also be coming mid-season.

The CW only has 2 new shows in fall, airing on Mondays is Jane the Virgin is about a 23-year-old girl that hasn't had sex that becomes accidentally artificially inseminated.  The other new show is The Flash, which was a concept that premiered on Arrow and will spinoff from their into it's own series.  This, of course, stars the comic book character The Flash (played by Glee's Grant Gustin) and will focus on him trying to solve his mother's murder and prove his father's innocence, and probably fight a few bad guys along the way.

Here's the updated Fall Schedule that me and my wife use.  Orange are new shows, blue are shows we both watch, red are shows she watches by herself, and yellow are ones that I watch by myself, and green are shows we do not watch:
