Geek News You Should Know: 6/19/14

1)  Is this the future of late night?  Netflix and Chelsea Handler certainly hope so as they have announced that Chelsea will be on the online video platform starting in 2016.  The last episode of Chelsea Lately will air on E! August 26.  Chelsea has signed a multi-year agreement with Netflix and in addition to the show will do a stand-up comedy special as well as 4 docu-comedy specials which will give her opinions on several different topics.  No real details have been announced on how frequently the show will be released.

2) One of my favorite topics of the podcast is the food segment, so I'm always happy when there is new food items announced and it's even better when they are TV related.  Ben & Jerry's which previously made a Schweddy Balls flavor of ice cream based on the famous Saturday Night Live sketch is going to be making some new SNL flavors.  The two new flavors are based on the Digital Short Lazy Sunday and Kristen Wiig's character Gilly.  The "Lazy Sunday" flavor is not Mr. Pibb and Red Vine flavored but instead it's made up of vanilla cake batter ice cream with chocolate and yellow cupcake pieces (not sure if they are Magnolia or not) and a chocolate frosting swirl.  "Gilly's Catasrophic Crunch" is a combination of chocolate and sweet cream ice creams with caramel clusters, fudge-covered almonds and marshmallow swirl.  No official release date has been mentioned but they should be out when the 40th season of SNL starts this fall.

3) Paramount has announced a bunch of movies that are in production and scheduled to be released in 2016.  While Transformers: Age of Extinction hasn't been released yet, the fifth Transformers movie will come out in 2 years along with Paranormal Activity 5, Beverly Hills Cop IV, G.I. Joe 3, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2, Star Trek 3, and a Ben-Hur remake.  It's weird to think we'll have to wait another 2 years for a Paranormal Activity movie as it seemed for a while there they were coming out every few months.  It seems like it's been a while since we've seen Eddie Murphy in general so it'll be cool to see him back as Axle Foley.

4) While I don't watch Lifetime except for Project Runway, I'm excited for "The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story" which will air on the network September 1.  This TV-movie will tell the behind the scenes antics of the cast with sex and drugs in a similar vain to Dustin Diamond's book Behind the Bell.

5) Zombie shows are all the rage and coming this fall to SyFy is, that's right, a zombie show called Z Nation.  They just announced the core cast members of the show who will be Harold Perrineau (Lost), Tom Everett Scott (Soutland) and DJ Qualls (The New Guy). The show will tell the story three years after a zombie virus has devastatated the country and a group must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California in hopes of creating a vaccine.  This show sounds pretty cool and while I watch too much already, I will definitely check this out.
